How to install laminate flooring
Installing laminate flooring can be a rewarding DIY project, thanks to its user-friendly click-lock system. However, for optimal results, it's essential to follow these general steps:
1. Prepare the Subfloor:
Ensure that the subfloor is clean, dry, and level. If necessary, use a leveling compound to fill in any low spots.
Install a moisture barrier if your laminate flooring does not have it built into the underlayment.
2. Acclimate the Flooring:
Allow the laminate flooring to acclimate to the room for at least 48 hours before installation. Keep it in the packaging, and leave it in the room where it will be installed.
3. Install Underlayment:
Roll out the underlayment across the entire floor, overlapping seams by a few inches. Tape the seams together.
4. Lay the First Row:
Begin in a corner of the room and lay the first plank with the tongue side facing the wall. Use spacers along the edges to create an expansion gap.
5. Install Subsequent Rows:
Click the next plank into the previous one by angling it and then pressing it down. Use a tapping block and hammer to ensure a tight fit.
Stagger the seams between rows, ensuring that the end joints are at least 12 inches apart.
6. Cut Planks as Needed:
Measure and mark planks for cutting using a tape measure and pencil.
Cut planks using a crosscut saw or circular saw for straight cuts, and a miter saw for angled cuts.
7. Install Around Doorways and Obstacles:
Use a jigsaw or handsaw to cut planks to fit around door frames and other obstacles.
8. Complete the Installation:
Continue installing planks row by row until you reach the opposite wall.
Trim the last row if needed, leaving an expansion gap along the final wall.
9. Install Transition Strips:
Install transition strips in doorways or between different types of flooring if necessary.
10. Install Baseboards and Molding:
Install baseboards and molding around the perimeter of the room to cover the expansion gap.
11. Clean Up:
Remove spacers and clean up any debris.
